{"id":704,"date":"2015-02-16T18:18:24","date_gmt":"2015-02-17T01:18:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sintellectual.org\/hstr491\/?p=704"},"modified":"2015-02-16T18:18:24","modified_gmt":"2015-02-17T01:18:24","slug":"figure-159-a-b-art-of-contest-weiqi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.sintellectual.org\/hstr491\/archives\/704","title":{"rendered":"Figure 15:9, a-b, Art of Contest: Weiqi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Figure 15:9, a-b Manuscript of the <em>Qi Jing<\/em> (<em>Classic of<\/em> Weiqi)<\/p>\n<p>Since my reading response was based on the importance of written manuals to the survival of games, I thought it would be fitting to describe\u00a0the <em>weiqi<\/em> manual depicted in the\u00a0<em>Art of Contest<\/em>. Dating to the middle of the sixth century, the <em>weiqi<\/em> manual is one of the oldest survivors of its kind. \u00a0While not visually striking in the traditional sense, the manual&#8217;s paper is in unbelievably good condition and the Chinese characters inscribed in black ink are\u00a0still perfectly visible. \u00a0Signed by a Tibetan monk, the game was already spreading throughout Asia in the sixth century. The bottom corner is permanently marked with the orange British Museum emblem, thus it will be forever marred\u00a0by a foreign land that does not even partake in the game of <em>weiqi<\/em>. The simplicity of the manual reflects the simple design of the actual game. \u00a0Frivolous designs are\u00a0not necessary to the games popularity, the complex nature of\u00a0<em>weiqi<\/em> is\u00a0what attracts its many followers. \u00a0Beyond its appearance the manual speaks to the importance of written game manuals to the nature of games. \u00a0Manuals, if they survive, help to solidify game play and rules. \u00a0Game variations are less likely to occur if an accepted rule set is available for reference. \u00a0Manuals allow for games to be played consistently across large expanses, as would be necessary in the vast continent of Asia. \u00a0Writing rules down also lends to a sense of permanency, there is a hope that the game described will remain popular long after the time of its inception. <em>Weiqi<\/em> is still played two thousand years after its inception, with very little adaption occurring within that time.
